Internship Description

The Internship is a 12-month fixed-term contract with a stipend of  R5000 p.m. This is an opportunity to work with dynamic creatives at the prestigious and world-renowned Market Theatre Foundation, which has a long legacy of contributing to the Arts and culture sector in South Africa.

The learning experience includes on-the-job training offering a wide range of skills that will provide invaluable work experience.

The following Internship Opportunities are open for applications:


Digital Communications Intern

Description: The incumbent will join the Market Theatre Foundation’s overall Brand & Communications team.  The Intern will work to ensure the successful running of digital channels including but not limited to database and social media campaigns that create new customer leads, promote the brand and its products, and contribute to overall company growth

Requirements:

  • A relevant degree/diploma in: Marketing / Brand Communications / Media studies
  • Basic knowledge of campaign management from conceptualisation to execution
  • Awareness of the nature and role of theatre and entertainment industries.
  • Hands-on experience with social media monitoring
  • Ability to interpret social media traffic, impressions, target and audience
  • Knowledge of online marketing

Graphic Designer Intern

Description: The incumbent will join the Market Theatre Foundation’s overall Brand & Communications team. The incumbent will work closely with the MTF’s team in creating visual marketing material for all the departments of the MTF and provide visual material for marketing and branding purposes. This includes, but is not limited to, the design of posters, flyers, banners, digital media (social media, website, and other visual online assets), annual reports, brochures, merchandise etc.

Requirements:

  • Degree in: Fine/Visual arts, Communications, Media or related field
  • Excellent proficiency and experience in MAC OS, Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office.
  • Understanding of copyright and licensing of visual material.
  • Understanding of social media and other online platform

Audience Development Intern

Description: The Audience Development intern will work to strengthen the relationship between an individual and the arts in a way that involves changing the individual’s behaviour. They do this by breaking barriers, educating stakeholders about art forms and thus broadening audiences for arts in general or attracting first-time visitors specifically to the theatre with a central aim of bums on seats which leads to an increase in revenue. Arrange meetings within/off-site with potential clients in a bid to capture their interest which will generate bums on seats. Seeking and capturing referrals to grow the Audience Development database in order to disseminate information that will lead to potential bums on seats for our shows/productions. Attending to any show, and ticketing queries from stakeholders/patrons.

Requirements:

  • National Diploma or Degree in: Marketing / Sales / Stakeholder Relations
  • Further relevant qualifications, e.g. sales & marketing would be advantageous

Stage Manager Intern

Description: Successful incumbent will assist stage managers to ensure that every assigned production is stage managed efficiently and effectively to a predefined process and procedure as documented in the Stage Managers’ manual. Ensure efficient and effective management of the communication channels between stakeholders and act in the best interest of the company.

Requirements:

  • Degree/Diploma in: Performing Arts or relevant Theatre Qualifications
  • Ability to manage and motivate a team of people in a very stressful environment
  • Able to work under pressure

Sound Technician Intern

Description: The incumbent will be a member of the Market Theatre’s professional technical production team and be involved in the staging of Market Theatre productions specifically from a sound perspective.  The applicant will be working with Market Theatre’s sound technician to do set-ups for events, productions and outside events, Applicant will require technical experience in sound engineering, sound set up, patching and mixing. Programming cues with a mixing console for shows or events. Operating analogue or digital mixing consoles for shows and events

Requirements:

  • Degree/Diploma in: Sound Technology/Engineering, Performing arts
  • This position will suit a sound engineering graduate or a person with previous sound experience.

Lighting Intern

Description: The successful incumbent will be part of the Technical department team where they will assist in hanging lights, focusing, programming, repairing, and troubleshooting any problems that may arise and operating lights for all events/ shows and conferences at the Market Theatre Foundation. Operating lighting desks and cues during technical get-in and performances and efficiently operating effects equipment as per SM cues. Read and interpret light plots, cue sheets, and other technical documents. Assist in the load–in and load–out of lighting in the theatre venue. Applying technical knowledge of lighting to achieve the determined artistic objectives.Repairing or replacing light bulbs or tubes in light fixtures, or replacing entire light fixtures when needed

Requirements:

  • NDip/Degree in: Lighting Design or  Theatre Production 

IT Technician Intern

Description: The successful applicant will assist in providing onsite and remote support as and when required. Responsible for set up, maintaining, and installing hardware. To develop and maintain effective technical processes to ensure internal and external satisfaction.

Requirements:

  • Completed Grade 12 / Matric
  • Diploma in: IT 
  • Completed A+ N+ Qualification
  • Basic knowledge of computer hardware and software
  • Familiarity with common operating systems (e.g., Windows 10, 11 | Server 2016,2019 | macOS)
  • Basic understanding of networking concepts and protocols
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve technical problems

Administration Intern

Description: Generic front office management and reception services, attend to visitors and deal with enquiries on the phone and face to face. Supply information regarding the organization to the general public, clients and customers. Filing, records management and administrative functions.

Requirements:

  • Diploma in: Office Admin or equivalent Knowledge of Administrative and clerical procedures
  • Knowledge of computers and relevant software applications
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practices

Media Intern

Description: The incumbent will join the Market Theatre Foundation’s Market Photo Workshop. The incumbent will be responsible for the consolidation of material for publications, brochures, postcards, newsletters etc, while ensuring high standards. They will be expected to design media materials according to MPW corporate identity and provide templates as needed. They will also conceptualise and implement publicity and marketing strategies for all Photo Workshop courses, projects, and programmes in order to maximise public consumption and involvement, together with relevant managers.

Requirements:

  • Relevant qualification – in Media or Marketing
  • Basic knowledge of campaign management from conceptualisation to execution
  • Awareness of the nature and role of theatre and entertainment industries photography and visual culture landscape.
  • Hands-on experience with social media monitoring
  • Ability to interpret social media traffic, impressions, target and audience

Library Assistant Intern

Description: Library assistants are responsible for sorting and shelving books according to their categorization, assisting customers with internet access and ensuring their technical needs are met. They also manage inquiries over the counter, via email or telephone, among other duties. Helping students and colleagues locate books. Checking books in and out at the front desk. Sorting and shelving books according to their categorization. Maintaining records of books taken out and books brought back. Cataloguing new arrivals. To assist the Programmes Officer in managing and running the Literacy and Homework Support Programme supported by the SEF Internship Programme. To assist with the development of public programming associated with the reading rooms.

Requirements:

  • Library Information Studies or similar 

Research and Archiving Intern

Description: The incumbent will assist in coordinating the development of archive and research programming for the Market Photo Workshop. This position supports the public programming and administrative capacities of projects and courses, exhibitions, research and the Photo Workshop library.

Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualification in: Humanities (qualification in: Photography, Visual and Heritage Archives will be advantageous)
  • Computer skills (Mac and PC, Excel and Word, E-mail
  • Be driven and passionate about photography and the importance of archives for South Africa’s future
  • Be able to work under pressure, unsupervised and show strong initiative
  • Show a critical awareness of the nature and role of photography, archives in general, and of the education and development landscape for African practitioners

Supply Chain Management Intern

Description: The successful candidate will be performing specific administrative tasks in relation to the acquisition of goods and services within the department in compliance with the city government’s procurement policies and practices. Acquire quotations in compliance with guidelines stated in the procurement policy. Facilitate gathering and return of quotations to project managers to allow assessment of responses and finalize the selection of service providers. Keep track of control documentation, business procedures and processes in relation to supplier requirements and applications

Requirements:

  • National Diploma/Degree in: Supply Chain / Logistics Management

Technical Assistant Intern

Description: The successful applicant will assist to develop and maintain effective technical processes to ensure internal and external satisfaction. Ability to manage and motivate a team of people in a very stressful environment. Maintains all department equipment and ensure they conform to all maintenance and service procedures and are in good working order. Programming cues with a mixing console for shows or events

Requirements:

  • Degree/Diploma in: Performing Arts or relevant Theatre qualifications
  • Knowledge of sound/lighting

Producing Administrator Intern

Description: The incumbent will work in the Producer’s office and gain in-depth knowledge of the administration behind professional theatrical productions. Assist the Production Department with the drafting and maintenance of schedules

Requirements:

  • Degree/Diploma in: Office Administration or equivalent or arts-related qualification
  • Applicants will assist Producer and Assistant Producer with the administration of quotations and contracts
  • Computer literate
  • Basic accounting, communication, and project management skills

Maintenance Intern

Description: The successful incumbent will be assisting Handyman in performing multiple maintenance tasks throughout the day.

Requirements:

  • Building and construction qualification or similar
  • Computer Literacy ( excel to be specific)
  • Project Management 
  • Experience with hardware tools and electrical equipment
  • Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing or HVAC systems
  • Basic math skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Health and safety experience will be advantageous.
